Viamericas

Viamericas — Wire transfer services for Latin America - Software as a Service conversion (SaaS) (www.viamericas.com)

"We are very very happy with the new system!" - Luis Gonzalez, CFO

Softjourn developed a security module for authorization and authentication of users of the web version of Viamericas' agent payment service. The security module included the authorization and authentication of workstations and encryption and decryption of data.
  • The server is implemented as a COM object with an interface for the creation of security keys for encrypting and decrypting.
  • The client is implemented as an ActiveX component and JavaScript. The ActiveX object provides an interface for saving the keys received from the server; utilized for encrypting and decrypting data.

Technologies used:

  • C++
  • HTML, ASP
  • MS SQL
  • Windows

"This project puts our company in a competitive advantage with regards to our competitors because we were able to emulate what large banks are doing quickly and effectively even before some of them launch their own product, providing unbanked customers with the means to use financial services." - Luis Gonzalez, CFO

Issue: Viamericas was using a Check21 solution provided by a nationwide bank. They were also growing at a rapid pace. Given their agent's acceptance of using the solution, Viamericas knew that they would soon outgrow their current system. Therefore Viamericas decided to build its own solution, with the assistance of their financial institution, and Softjourn. The new solution had to provide operational as well as economic efficiencies.

Solution: Given the time that Viamericas had worked with the current solution, Viamericas knew what they wanted in their own application and what they didn't. They also knew how they were planning to continue growing the structure of the company.

To provide a solution, Softjourn gathered requirements from Viamericas, designed, developed and tested a new centralized server application and client check truncation application. Softjourn also interfaced with the current Check21 solution provider to design, develop and test the process of sending electronic cash letters and receiving electronic returns files.

The new solution also included functionality which was not available with the current solution such as the ability to put checks on hold automatically based on system wide restrictions established at the central Viamericas' location.

Another integral part of the new solution was to integrate the appropriate recognition software in to the final solution. Softjourn initially researched solutions from 10 vendors, performed in depth testing of 5 solutions, and then presented the best solutions to Viamericas for their final selection.

Result: The new solution will pay for itself within less than a year and it gives Viamericas a competitive advantage and the flexibility that they need as they grow.
"Our agents like working with the new Viacheck system over our old solution! Their work is consolidated on a couple of screens making it much easier for them to use." - Esteban Bernal, VP of Engineering
